The Windows 98 system was probably using FAT32 and original Windows 95 will
not work on it. The CMOS battery is loose or low. In an old system (older
than ī94 ?) it could be soldered to the board but there is usually someplace
to connect a package of two AAA batteries. It will be shaped like a small
dark cylinder or could be a little black box. You should take your system
to a qualified technician to check this out, but it is an easy fix. When
you turn the computer on, it doesnīt know what hard drive or floppy you have
installed, without a battery to save this information, you have to go into
the BIOS setup (usually pressing the DEL key) and re-enter the information,
or if you are lucky it has an autodetect function. Computers that are left
on all the time donīt have a problem, but as soon as you turn it off, all
your settings are lost. Once the system has the proper configuration of
your hard drive, FDISK for Winfows 95 should work and you can get your file
system back to the original FAT16. I hope this helps.

Subject: cmos battery or flashing?

Hi all,
I'm trying to re-install windows 95 on an old computer but to no avail.
I had to reformat the hard drive because it had partially win98 on it.
Tried using the f-disk command and the bootdisk but nothing seems to be
working now.
I can't get past the press F1 to resume.
It keeps saying cmos battery is low? How do you fix this problem then?
I looked but could not find a cmos battery; what if this computer hasn't got
a cmos battery?????? Is the only option than the Flashing of the hard
drive??
Some feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Martha Shade
