Further to my last post on the topic of trying to upgrade my Win98 OS to 256 colors (which was not successful despite the various helpful suggestions), I have identified a possible source of the problem: on POST, there are two quick bleeps followed by a longer one; although I haven't found any BLEEP code specific to the PC Chips M747 BX-Pro motherboard, I did find codes for others which related two quick bleeps to a motherboard fault.

Is it possible this means the MB needs replacing?

A further investigation - a diagnostic test of the HDD - revealed that it failed the ESS tests; could this also be a factor in the display wizard's inability to upgrade the colors?

Many thanks for the already enlightening advice.

Ron
