A few months ago 4 of my home computers were hit with some malware. Each
machine had Spybot installed and each had one reputable free antivirus
program, not all the same. I was able to rescue 2 of the drives and had to
use clone backups to restore the other two. Spybot was the only utility to
detect the malware. I reported the malware to one of the antivirus
companies. The responder apologized for missing it, and made a statement to
the effect "One antivirus program will not find everything". I continue to
keep one antivirus and Spybot "active" on each machine. I also keep at
least one other antivirus "dormant" for periodic "second opinions". Maybe
overkill, but it has worked pretty well for me
