Thanks,  I fixed this problem by replacing the HD.  Backup image worked 
perfecting using my recovery disk for W7.

Turned out the HD supplied with the computer was a Seagate 7200.12 which 
apparently has a documented history of problems unless the firmware is 
updated.

Replaced it with a WD 1 TB drive.
