Look at this key and remember the setting... (Might be something like "20")

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse]
"MouseSensitivity"="16"

(This gives me mouse travel of two inches for "side to side of screen"
on a cheap AOpen PS/2 mouse on Win-XP-Pro...)

Try different numbers between ten and forty...
You will have to re-boot to see changes applied.

(The standard disclaimer about being careful in the Registry, bla bla, bla...)

Is the surface you are "on" something the Optical mouse can "see" correctly?
I never even needed a mouse pad with one of those...
