You may have bad software. See below before you call cable company.

Yes. Uninstall DUN(Dialup Network) and, if you have a built in modem, don't
let 98 install it when you reboot. After reboot try installing the cable
software. I would recommend that you disconnect the cable modem(RJ45) before
you do the cable software install as many of them require that you install
the software first and connect the modem after you shutdown and restart. It
will detect the hardware when you restart(don't let it install the dialup
modem...let the cable modem software find the cable modem)

All you should have in your Network Connections are the following:

Client for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)

(File and Print Sharing is optional only if you are networking to another
PC)

Be certain that your are set up for DHCP and not a static IP or a Proxy
Server.
