In my experience they are not as good for accurate cursor positioning as
regular mice.  Just my opinion..

How so?  I use the optical mouse at home, and a ball-Intellimouse at work,
and notice no difference whatsoever in normal use.  I cannot think of a
thing that my optical mouse does not do every bit as well as my conventional
ball-mouse.

The only argument I've ever heard that holds any water is from the gaming
community.  If you move the optical mouse VERY (and I mean VERY) fast from
side to side, it will occasionally move up/down instead of side to side.
But for regular use (and even my gaming use) it works flawlessly.

The only other thing that I can think of that some people complain about is
that the cheapest-optical (the one that looks JUST LIKE the old
Intellimouse) feels "light" or "flimsy."  The Explorer and the New
Intellimouse Optical are both closer to the weight of the original
mechanical Intellimouse.

I guess what I am saying is that you could argue not liking the Optical
mouse because of physical characteristics, but functionally they work every
bit as well as the mechanical mouse.  Of course, I may be wrong.
