Mick I had the same thing happen to me with an AWE64 Gold I have. It never
sounded as loud as my regular SB16 when I played music CDs.

I finally broke down and called Creative labs and they told me they don't
put amplifying chips on that board because it affects the quality/clarity of
the sound. Perhaps is the same with your card.
