Since several have suggested this, it may bear repeating, with display
drivers deleted, as recommended in MS troubleshooting procedure I was
following, there is no display driver line to change. Additionally, in
Safe Mode, Win98 will not install new drivers in Add New Hardware.

Tried registry restore, going through all five backups, without success.
