You need to get GTE back to check your lines. There is probably a poor
connection somewhere or GTE has added additional hardware in your line
between you and the digital switch which has resulted in poor line
conditions. If the latter is the case you will not be able to receive 56K
or ADSL. I have GTE lines and I am in this situation. GTE will tell you
that they do not concern themselves with data transmission quality...only
voice line transmission. However they openly market ISP, ISDN and ADSL
service. I have been a GTE hostage customer for around 30 years and it has
been my experience that GTE will wait until forced by regulation or market
competition to upgrade their equipment. You can get them to come out by
complaining about voice conditions but I have never found them responsive
to data transmission conditions. In your case since they have charged you
money to degrade your data transmission conditions I would assume they
would come back to correct them.

I would be very interested to hear what caused this ....... how this works
out .....and I would appreciate a private post once you have resolved the
problem.

an additional phone line added to our home.
>When I was using their line I was connecting at 49333 bps.
>
>Now after the phone company (GTE) installed the additional line, the speed
>suddenly drops to 26400 bps
>Would anyone know why this happened, the line from the house to the telco is
>the same wire, just the other pair are now being used.
