I guess the most recent example could have been the internet explorer vulnerability. In this case however, MS decided to patch XP anyway, which creates a slippery slope for them about serious bugs and recognizing the fact that XP is still widely used.
I would not bet on them to do the same thing for the next serious bug that comes up.
