I am not familiar with the NTI software, but most CD recording software includes
a "test" burn option, where the drive goes through the motions of burning the
CD, but it does not enable the write laser. This is to make sure you can burn
the disk without getting an interruption that would turn it into a coaster.

Check to see if this option is turned on.
