Dave,

If you go to www.shareware.com and search the DOS files area for word
processor (two words) you will find GALAXY (I used this one years ago) and
many other word processors. If you search the DOS file area for
wordprocessor (one word) you will find PC-Write -- another excellent
shareware program. These are not free, but very inexpensive. Either of
these two can save a plain text file, which you could then load into
"dad's" machine for formatting and editing.

But I still think your best bet is to locate a copy of MS Works for DOS,
version 3 or 4, at a yard sale/flea market, etc. It is a full featured,
"windows-like", WP with spell check, images, bulleted lists, and lots of
other features AND it can save in Word or WordPerfect format. Add in an
A/B printer switch (about $20-30us at Wal-Mart) and the kids can work
completely independent from dad's machine.
