Thanks Brad.  It turns out the modem was a bit loose in its PCI slot.  I 
pulled it out and put it back into place and everything is working fine 
now.  I forgot, I had set it up so as not to hear the connection sounds; 
they drive me nuts on this slightly older one <G> but I can't seem to 
keep it re-set so I don't hear the noise.  Given up trying...

The one we 'fixed' is the one I loaned to my nephew who lives about 50 
miles away.  I also loaned him an APC, which he has never plugged in.  
You can bet that if he wheedles me into getting the computer back 
(likely, since he doesn't drive and can't come visit when he wants to 
use a computer) that I will plug things in appropriately on. the. spot!  
-- with specific instructions on how to do an emergency shutdown and 
unplug at the first hint of a storm!

We are not on AOL.....
