Because there is no audio/modem/network chips, software use CPU to perform
those functions, which is especially a bad thing if applications want full
power of CPU (eg, play online shoot-em-up games). I have had some really bad
reports on those onboard stuff, and speak from real life experience, I
personally don't like anything onboard (but onboard SCSI is nice).
