The 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is (for lake of a better term) a fake address. If you do
an IPCONFIG or WINIPCFG with no cable attached, then you'll get the
169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP. Some cables will give a LINK lite and still be bad. Only
two pair is needed for 10 base but if one of the wires is not properly
crimped then you'll get no connection. Try connecting the laptop to the
cable of one of the other computers and do a WINIPCFG. If it works, then get
a new CAT5 cable. If it doesn't work, then double check your dongle. Xircoms
where cheaply made. A new PCMCIA card will run you about $45 for a 10 base
card.
As an aside, use NETBUI for computer to computer communications. If you
leave TCP/IP only, then your computer to computer communications are
actually being routed through the Internet.
