Wow Am I glad I asked ! I had been trying to save the updates one at a time
and it was not fun. This procedure enabled me to put the update files that I
selected in a "shopping basket" and download them all at once. It also created
a subfolder structure within the download folder. I've now put them on a CD.
Nero complained that the directory structure was too deep but copied them
anyway.
I do use Ghost so I'm going out now to get another hard drive to create my own
"blank fully updated W98SE system drive". A great idea. Thanks to William
Pike.

>Visit windows update, on the left side of the screen see where it says
>"Personalize Windows Update" click on that and check the box where it says
>"Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also" then click
>on the left side where it says "Welcome". You should now see a link for the
>Windows Update Catalog on the left side. Click it. you can now download all
>(or any) of the updates and save them to disk.
