The digital connection would save your machine from having to convert the sound from digital to analog and back to digital.  It is faster and more accurate, so if your soundcard/mobo combo support it, then use it.  Sounds like the latter may not be the case, and for what you have and intend to use it for, it would probably be overkill. Analog is likely to be the connection you need and that will work.
