Don't throw away the printer yet, or bring it in for repairs quite yet.
There is one thing you can try which may solve your problem. I have had
grinding noises on my HP 680C printer and these occurred shortly after I
purchased it. It has since run fine. The problem that I had was with
dirt/dust accumulating on the thin plastic strip located behind the print
cartridges. (On my printer this strip is also right behind the metal pole
that the cartridges run along across the printer.) The strip is clear
plastic and has a number of vertical lines. This is how the printer
determines the print head location. You can take a soft cloth and
carefully!!! wipe that strip clean. Do not use any cleaners on it--only a
soft cloth. It's best to do this with the printer off so that the print
head does not move in the way.
