 You won't believe it, for an entirely different reason, I had to change my
power supply, and behold! everything now works fine. Why that should be so,
I can't figure out right now. MP3 files now play well.
I've , however, upgraded the AWE 64 to SB Live (Retail) and I'm in a
different audio world.
Thanks to all who replied and offfered their suggestions.

I just finished a weekend of installing the Ensonic Sound card with similar
symptoms. I had to not only remove the Audio Devices in Control Panel, but
also had to physically remove the card, re-boot, shutdown, re-place the
card, and then re-boot and re-install drivers etc.  It turned out to be a
conflict with the Modem which also had to be removed and replaced.
