You are going to need syncronous DSL, I suspect you can't live
with different upload and download speeds, and in my area T-1 is price
competitive.

Connecting Lan's 1KM apart has many options from two modems at each end
real slow ) to a T-1 inbetween ( fast but expensive ) . You can also see if
the telco will release a dry pair to you and use a ADSL connection. A search
on Google under ADSL dry pair will give you a bunch of ideas. It might cost
less than a T-1.
