This sounds like your poor disc is getting old, and like
all old things it takes a little longer to get going.

If you can you could try setting your BIOS to check all of
your memory rather than just the 1st Meg. The extra time
that this takes might permit the disc to get up to it
working speed.

This is not a perfect fix but it may allow you time to get
yourself a new disc.

I have used such a disc in my machine in the past as a
second disc which I only used as tempory store.
I.E. I put my swap file and my tempory directory on it.
