If the NIC binding indicates that it is to obtain an IP address from a server,
then it will pause at boot for about 30s waiting for a DHCP server to respond.
If your DSL initialization takes places later, then you might be able to assign
an IP address, and the DSL stuff will still re-program it. I am not sure about
that. One of my business clients has an SDSL business line, but that is
configured aith 16 static IP's, and the modem (flowpoint) can act as a DHCP
server to assign addresses from within this 16 address range. Residential use is
probably different, since they can't afford the overhead of 3 additional IP's
(mode, high broadcast and low broadcast) for a single useable IP.
