Many telephony standards are named by the colour of the book
they were published in, many CD standards are named
after places where the ideas were hammered out.
I guess there's more of a social side to CD engineers! ;-)

A quick search at AltaVista: http://www.digital.altavista.com
using search string: "El Torito" bootable +CD-ROM

(NB - if you just search on "El Torito"
you get a _lot_ of eating-houses!
The El Torito where it happened is in Irvine, CA :-)

gives, near the top of a lot of hits:

(1) the simple answer...

http://www.qps-inc.com/tips.htm "Tips" (104K), an interesting page
of general info about CD standards and CD-R burning.

"The “El Torito” Bootable CD-ROM Format Specification, Version 1.0,
defines a method of packaging one or several “images” of floppy or
hard disks on a single CD with the ability to selectively boot a
computer system from any single image. El Torito is an industry-wide,
open, nonlicensed standard that is available without charge for use
in developing computer systems, CD-ROM drives, and CD-Recordable software.
A bootable CD-ROM BIOS can “live” on a controller card for a CD-ROM drive,
either EIDE or SCSI, or on the CPU board of the computer."

(2) the real meat...
