The old cdroms: 2/4/8 speed can't read the new disks that are being made
with the high speed writers.
There are lots of formats to write in and the one that is the quickest is
not always compatiable with the older drives.
You can get a patch download from I think Adaptec that corrects this. Talk
about reverse engineering. Before I got my 24 speed I never really had any
problems with my good old double speed.
