I had the same problem years ago with a P166mhz. I replaced the processor
with another P166mhz and problems stopped.

It was a bad processor in my case. See if you can borrow another processor
from somewhere to try in the board.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Boot Problems

I sure could use your help in diagnosing a problem with my sons computer.
Over time it has developed problems till it would no longer boot up at all.
Before entering into Windows 95 we receive one of two messages:

Device IOS conflict Windows Protection Error Reboot your computer; or
Windows Protection Error Reboot the Computer.

Approximately every 6 boots or so I reach Windows however, the environment
is extremely unstable.

I have reformatted and reloaded Windows from floppy/CD-ROM, re-flashed the
BIOS, reset CMOS, and set everything to defaults. Still no luck. Could
these errors be a symptom of a failing piece of hardware?

When my son came to me for assistance I noticed that all Internet
application shortcuts had been wiped off the Start menu and desktop. He
stated that happened first, then the boot problems. Then I noticed an
unusual program named Annotate? What is this? Could this have caused the
problem? My son stated that he never remembered downloading and/or
installing it. He does frequent on-line gaming sites.

System:

GW2K Socket 7 Thor MB
128 RAM
400 AMD K6III
Phoenix BIOS
ISA Soundscape VIVO
PCI Creative TNT
ISA Viking 56k Modem
ISA SCSI card

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

Regards, E-
