My old scanner had a proprietary SCSI card and it also took over 100% of
the resources while scanning.  I think that is just the nature of the
beasts.  The PC has to devote all it's attention to capturing the image
otherwise there would be gaps in the "picture"

I just installed a new parallel port model and, like Dale, the
installation was a breeze.  It took less than 15 minutes - including
removing the old SCSI model.  I think that most of Tom's problems were -
as he said - trying to install the scanner on a 486 machine with a
standard printer port.

While comparison shopping for my new scanner, I noticed that all the
brands listed minimum system requirements somewhere on the outside of the
box.  Just make sure you do not try to go below those minimums and you
should have no problems.
