Chris I have struck similar problems twice before. The first one we found the NIC wasn't quite seated properly, in fact one end was out by a mere 1mm from the PCI slot, but it made a huge difference once pushed in properly. The other was caused believe it or not by not having the latest drivers for the motherboards chipset, which were VIA chipset, downloading the latest drivers rectified the problem - I think that issue only occured with 98SE.
