Windows remembers the last account/password that logged in
successfully.  If you get the "No domain server" message, you
have in fact logged in successfully, and will have access to
network resources as soon as contact to the network is
established.
  (If you have shares mounted from the server, they'll show in
Windows Explorer with little red Xs on them until you actually
browse to them -- then the Xs should go away.)

  It should not be necessary to log out and back in.  >90% of
the time with a laptop, it should be safe to ignore the
"No domain server" warning.
  Your diagnosis that this is because of driver loading is, I
believe, entirely correct, and there may not be a way to fix it.
