Subject >>> 98 Bootup..Shutdown...Restart...Hang
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------

I have a new build from old parts......this is just going to be a word
processing work horse.

FIC PA2007
Cyrix 686L 166
32 megs of Micron EDO
Generic S3 Virge card
Teac CD ROM 6 speed
Seagate EIDE
new Mitsumi floppy
Generic ESS Sound Card
Viking 33.3 modem.

This is a new Win98 install...I am using all Win98 drivers except for the
modem...the PC is stable and runs great when I am booted up BUT sometimes
when I shut down...sometimes when I first boot......and sometimes (this is
the most frequent occurrence) when I restart
my screen goes blank and the PC locks.....and this is the part I can't
figure out....the floppy light stays on ? ?

I must power down and cold boot in order to recover.

I have disabled all power saving devices in the BIOS and in Win 98...there
is no antivirus software installed and the BIOS virus features are disabled.

The only other symptom I noticed is that when I load 98 the logo screen
colors are sometimes <off>....this made me suspect the video card so I
installed the old drivers that came with the card instead of the 98 drivers
but it made no difference so I have returned to the 98 drivers.

If it wasn't for the floppy light staying on I would say bad video card but
why would the floppy be affected ??

Any ideas?

thanks.
