Thanks-all- for the info & education.  I wasn't really trying to get this "modernized"- just wanted to get it the best it could be- so I guess that's where it is right now.

Now, if only I could find the dreaded & elusive sound card driver- gah!  Anyone here have an idea on a sound card w/CD-ROM ports (Sony, Mitsumi, Panasonic)?  FCC# brings up a now-defuct company.  Chips are Crystal & Opti.  No luck, so far, in my many hours at the typical driver sites...   :^(
