This just means it's seeing your DEL keypress during startup, when it isn't
expecting any keys to be held down.  Nothing's broken.

because the battery went flat.

As others have suggested, there was probably a setup program originally
supplied on a floppy.  There are "generic" cmos setup utilities around, that
might work.  I'll try to find one tonight and send it to you.
