That Xircom K56 Flex PC Card modem could give you trouble. Before the
V90 standard for 56k modems, there were two incompatible types;
1. The 56K X2 type, (like your Gateway's).
2. The K56 Flex type, (like the Xircom).
If your ISP, (Internet Service Provider) had X2 modems, your k56flex
modem would not connect at 56k. Only 33.6k max. And vice versa. Your
modem had to match your isp's modems.
Check with the primary ISP you will be connecting this to and see
which type modems they have. If they have updated to V90 the
xircom *should* be ok.
The Xircom might be flash upgradeable to v90..might not. You need to
investigate that further.
PC Card modems for notebooks cost quite a bit more than ISA and PCI
modems for desktop computers. The PC Card is pcmcia slot type,
about the size of a credit card, but much thicker. There are other
devices that plug into the pcmcia slot, (network interface cards, etc).
It won't be cheap to replace if it doesn't work with your ISP.
I hope I've helped
Larry
