Gus-

Find a Windows 98 startup disk and boot the machine to DOS *with CD-ROM
support*. Put a CD in the drive and see if you can access it from DOS- do a
DIR command, for instance. The CD-ROM drive will probably be E: since the
Win98 startup disk creates a ramdrive on the next letter past your hard
drive (this is assuming that you have only one partition on the HD).

This will tell you if the drive has failed. If you can't access it from DOS
when booted in this fashion, the drive is likely bad.
