Ah, the NewCom Modem.  I had all kinds of problems with it.
You can call their tech support and send for a new one, but
I'd say return it, save a few bucks and buy a good one (e.g.
USR,Motorola,Zoom)..  You probably bought it cheap like I did (at Sun).
