Hello,
  The file that I use is c:\windows\hosts.  I'm using it to connect my
wife's Win 95 pc to my Linux pc.  A couple of suggestions:

1.)  Rename the file to 'hosts' (w/o the quotes).

2.)  Remove the '#' before the entries, as this is considered a "comment
file".

Hope this helps.  My situation works using a 95 to 95 connection, and a 95
to Linux (and vice-versa) utilizing Samba.
