Per everyone's suggestion, I uninstalled Norton. (Eventually, I think that really was the problem) But the computer continued to freeze. I could see a Norton shortcut icon still on the desktop. I couldn't delete it because I've never used a touchpad mousepad and couldn't figure out how to right click or drag to trash can. <g> (Besides, it was probably an invalid shortcut).

Since I didn't know what changes Norton had made to the Registry or if files were corrupted from continually freezing, I finally decided to reinstalled XP. (The owners said they had done that but they kept adding Norton). I didn't add Norton and have now given the computer a few hard chores <g> like deleting, cleaning files and optimizing.

It has been working great for the past 2 days. I appreciate the suggestions to remove Norton. I have been happy with Norton 2003 and have had no problem on my desktop, but this is a good lesson that sometimes a program you like on one computer can be the bain of your existence on another.
