I installed an HP CDRW 9510 32x and TEAC CD 540 40x in my PIII450/Abit BE6
board/UDMA 66/128K/Maxtor 7200rpm/Win98 system, and they seem too slow.

I have flash updated my system BIOS to the latest version. I have updated the
Teac drive firmware to the latest version. I have eliminated all uneccesary
startup items. I have reinstalled Windows and had it redetect the IDE
controllers and the drives. I have also tried various combinations of
settings, but the results I have gotten with Adaptec CD Creator 4.02's system
tests seem very slow to me.

For example, the HP's best numbers were 14x (data) 4x (DAE-digital audio
extraction), and the Teac's best numbers were 27x (data) and .9x (DAE). Yes,
that is a decimal point before the 9.

I am particularly concerned about the Teac DAE number, since others have
reported DAE speeds of 25x-30x, and this is the main reason I purchased it.

I am aware that CD drive speeds will vary from the drive specs based on file
size, system etc., but this is ridiculous! Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Also, I would like to know the system settings I should be using
for:

BIOS>Peripheral Devices>IDE Controller> PIO and DMA settings.
DEVICE MANAGER>CD ROMS>Disconnect, DMA etc.
DEVICE MANAGER>SYSTEM SETTINGS>PCI Bus, DMA Controller.

Right now, eveything is set either to "Auto" or to the Windows default
settings.
