I recall some issues with DMA being checked in device manager. I can't find
a tech sheet about it, but if you uncheck DMA in win9x or set the ide
secondary to PIO in win2000 / xp that might work. My real suspicion is that
the 6x cdrom is defective. You should disconnect the cdrw and install the
6x as the master. See if that works.

I've been trying to install a second CD-ROM to my 1.4GHz Athlon system. My
existing CD-RW is recognized as Master on the IDE2 controller but if I try
connecting the second drive, an older 6X, as slave Windows fails to
recognize either CD. Both CDs are recognized during bootup by the bios.
When I enter the bios setup both CDs are listed. One as Master and the
other as Slave but after completing bootup neither one shows in My Computer
and in the System Device Manager I have an error in the Secondary IDE
controller that says the controller is either not working or the driver is
not installed. I tried reinstalling the driver but I get the message that
the best driver is already installed. I've tried all combinations of jumper
pin placement on the 6X but none seem to solve the problem. I'm stumped.
