That was my thought, too.  I tried to load a floppy
yesterday, but it just kept giiving me 'non-system disk or
drive error" messages.  Then I looked at the label.  It said
"2DD, Double Density."  Which is the old style 720 kB disks.
All my new ones say "High Density."

I even have a lot of 360 k 5 1/4" floppies from my old
Zenith.  They're a hell of a lot slower than the new types,
and 1/4 the capacity.  At the time, they were "state of the
art."

Unfortunately, the art is advancing faster than the state.

I believe there is a way to get the newer 1.44 MB drives to
recognize the 720 KB format, but I don't know what it is.

Easiest way, of course, is to try one of each type.  Unless
you already thought of that.
