I'm assuming that you have set the jumper correctly to slave. And, that all
the cables are correctly attached. you can try to access the drive in dos by
booting from a floppy or restarting in dos. If that fails you can try to see
if the data is recoverable. Download the trial version of On Tracks Easy
Data Recovery from their website. This will NOT recover the data only tell
you if the data can be recovered. To actually recover the data, you need the
full version. The trial can be downloaded from
http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/
I would like to warn you that data recovery services can be expensive. Even
if they don't have to open the drive, the cost can be hundreds of dollars.
Note the cost of the Easy Data Recovery full versions:
http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecovery/licenseoptions.asp
However I had a drive come "back to life" after running the trial to check
to see if files were recoverable. So we can always hope for the best. The
fact that the drive shows up in "My Computer" without a drive letter makes
me think that the drive may just have a partition table problem (like mine
did) and possibly, running the trial of Easy Recovery will fix it like it
did on mine.

The thing is, this is a hard drive off of another computer with important
information on it that I need to save. It was starting to get disk write
errors and I just wanted to hook it up as a slave on another computer to get
the information off of it. Could it be that the hard drive is just toast??
I just installed it brand new a month ago.

I attached a hard drive as a slave and it is recognized when the computer

this happen, what could be causing this? (win98)
