How often are you upgrading to a larger drive?  My first suggestion would be to first buy the largest hard drive your computer will support (100, 120, 160,200 gigs)as it would be expensive to buy a 30, then a 40, then a 60, then an 80, and on and on.  I keep drivers on burned CD's, although after a few weeks or months most have been updated by the manufacturer. My first order of business before reinstalling an OS is to check the manufacturer's web sites for new drivers for all my hardware.  I have found that bringing home new hardware is no guarantee that the driver supplied on the enclosed CD is current.  I always check for newer ones before the first install of a new piece of hardware.  In fact, I would suggest that before you switch hard drives that you check for and download updated drivers which you can keep on a CD or zip disk.
