Not a ProPrinter experience, but a similar problem.

  On Star-something, 9-pin dot matrix, won't come online,
Paper Out on. [is Paper Out on at ProPrinter?]. Suspected
and found that the paper end detector was broken, no way
to fix or replace it; the solve was to disable paper end detection
in DIP switches at printer's back.
