I have had four APs die in service. In two cases, it was the radio module
that died, and in one of those cases there was no other symptom.

Talking to other techs, I seem to be hearing a consensus that the radio
portion of wireless gear is more failure-prone than people are used to.

If your laptops can still "hear" the neighbors, but cannot detect your own
device, then odds are pretty good that your AP is dead. (However, LinkSys'
claim that "since my network is secure this is not possible" is nonsense.)
