The System:
Abit BH6/Celeron 300A/64 MB Samsung G8 PC 100 RAM/Creative 5X Dxr2
PC-DVD/Aver TV-Phone Card/Creative AWE 64 OEM/Windows 98.

The Problem:
Before, MP3 files were playing well through WinAmp and Windows Media Player,
but after re-installation of Windows 98 MP3 files will no longer play. What
I get are the following error messages:

"MMSYSTEM004 The specified device is already in use. Wait until it is free,
then try again."

The Microsoft sounds that accompany the various Themes do no longer play. I
attempted to play one but got the following error message:

"Windows cannot play the sound C:\WINDOWS\media\The Microsoftsound.wav. Your
soundcard may be in use."

A re-installation of Windows 98 did not help. I have searched Microsoft
Knowledge Base and various Newsgroups but don't seem to find the solution.
Could someone please suggest solution(s) to this problem? I want to play
back my MP3 sound files. Thanks.
Richard.
