Karl,

  usually, the floppy disk drives are equipped with
either a bulge or a cut-out on the connector to ensure
that it will only fit one way. If this is your case,
you don't have to worry  - it simpy won't fit the wrong
way.
  otherwise, pin 2 may indeed be what you mentioned, but
I don't confirm that -- all drives I worked with had
either pin 1 marked, or nothing marked at all.
