Presario 7222 and 1782-Drive Controller Failure

I was replacing the hard drive on a Compaq Presario 7222 and everything
looked like it would work.   The new drive is a Western Digital Caviar
24300, 4.3 GB EIDE.  After one reboot, I got an error:  1782-Drive
Controller Failure.  The error continues to come up.  The only thing
different on the computer was the new drive.  Anybody know what may be
causing this?  I looked through Compaq's support site but it was anything
but helpful.
