I had the same problem  with an older MSI board recently. For some reason,
when the BIOS was set to Auto for UDMA disk access, XP couldn't see the
disk. I set the controller for PIO mode only and it worked. The drive
appears to be running in UDMA mode as indicated by XP. I don't know if this
is an option on your board, but if it is, give it a try. You might also set
all BIOS settings to "FAIL SAFE" and see if that helps.
