Thank you for triggering my memory!!

I have an old, but very reliable, 550C which has recently begun to have
problems. Your message reminded me about the kit HP sent me years ago - it
is a metal part with brillo pad like surface that the rollers run on. I put
in the floppy that came with it, ran it for the required 20 minutes, and the
printer is like new again!!

Subject: Re: [PCBUILD] paper feeder for Deskjet 500

HP Had a problem with the HP 500 and sent out a free cleaning kit to use on
the pickup roller when problems like you have described start. My
instructions were to not use the kit until problems started occurring and I
have used it only once on my HP 500. It appears to be only alcohol and
swabs, so Mark's advice would appear to be right on.
