I have solved this.

For a cable modem you go into Network Settings.....the appropriate
adaptor's TCP/IP Properties....DNS Configuration  tab....enable DNS and put
the local PC name in ...under .Domain Suffix put the domain of the cable
provider. THEN go to the IP Address tab and select < obtain an IP address
automatically >. Reboot and that's it.

The one thing I don't get is how the LAN still functions when the Proxy
server if off. I turned off the PC with the Proxy server and of course I
lost my Internet connection BUT the LAN still functioned normally.....I
don't get it....if your not specifying an IP address and you don't have the
proxy server running to handle things automatically how is the peer to peer
LAN
working ?

AtI have Sygate.  Not to a cable modem but to a regular modem.  You shouldn't
>have to configure the clients on your network at all.  Enable DHCP on the
>server machine.  Don't do anything to the clients.  Sygate in a NAT not a
>proxy server.  Leave everything blank in Internet options.  Don't configure
